Articles/Online annoyances
(July 2, 2002)
Some of my daily visits got it, some box or just a line, mostly very visible: “users online: blah, blah and blah…”. My nick, visible to the world, saying, we can give the guy a shout now, and he’ll have no excuse not to respond. But that completely ignores the shape I’m in… I could be lurking at my first cup of coffee, I could be tired as hell, doing a late midnight round. Maybe I don’t wanna be spotted, maybe I want the choice when to engage in action around. Hey, I like you, I do speak out, and maybe I’m a little paranoïd here, but my option is to log out immediately. It gets on my nerves, and I just log in to speak my mind when I really feel like it (meaning I skip the chatter, which might be a good thing, thinking of it…).
As spoken out, long time ago, by tin_omen, a major annoyance for him, and, at the time, a lesson for me, because I was doing what annoyed him, the use of target="_blank", thus, new windows popping up when clicking a link. Most stupid about it, even first users of a browser quickly learn about it having a ‘back’ button, so there’s really no need at all. To some users, it might look like you’re desperately trying to keep them at your pages, so why not quit doing that, mmm…
It gets worse… irc, while fairly new to me, has loads of annoyances coming with it. /me was kinda forced onto it, needed #skinnables #modspot to talk with people and nowadays, it’s kinda official and I tend to hang out there. I’m lucky the cliënt I found first is basic as hell and I can’t do much fancy stuff, wish others wouldn’t also. Ok, bots, evergoing name changes and all, I don’t fancy them, but common culture, no need to object. But:
..while perfectly ok with you being in multiple channels at once, if you’re talking with me, stick with me please. Don’t attract my attention and leave me waiting, I’m not your dog…
Don't you keep asking, please, “what's going on ?” Everybody keeps asking that question, while they all end up in irc because they’re bored… Find something funny online to get chatting going or something.
