Mix
(December 5, 2005)
Been offline most of last month, busy with work and stuff. The good part, the time I did spend online was talking with kmr about our setup of new VP. We've been thinking about it for a long time, and finally nailed down a good ‘summary’ of how content should be presented. I even started writing because kmr took it upon him to integrate editing of content within our msgboard, so now we have our private wiki and this will make it so much easier to create. VP would be nowhere without him.
Music. New Spillsbury (2) is good, as predicted. Needs a few spins to get that way; it doesn't give me same thrill debut did, though…
A tribute cd called ‘Dimesion Mix’ did. Children’s songs by Bruce Haack and Esther Nelson, covered by mostly eenie meenie artists. They gave out two mp3’s for promotion:
Fantastic Plastic Machine - I’m Bruce
The Apples in Stereo - Liza Jane
‘I’m Bruce’ is a killer, though ‘Liza Jane’ is much more representative for the album - slow & psychedelic, which sounds great when doing these simple, bright songs. My favorite is ‘Upside Down’, done by Blue-eyed Son. “Everything you do and say when you’re a child… it means a lot to the world around, it means a lot when the world’s upside down.” That a good thing to tell children, made me like original authors.
This version is great, and I like the two songs Blue-eyed Son has on the eenie meenie media page, so I’ll probably order that too. Directly from the label, that is. Did that with this mix, got a nice package with sticker, badge and all (and cover/booklet has a great design), everything just very likable.
Great lake swimmers
(October 18, 2005)
The Great Lake Swimmers is Tony Dekker + band, dark, slow, hrm, nothing like anything I would normally appreciate. Found them through 6ize, and I didn't expect much when I clicked the link; I hate whiny people with guitars. This was better - no selfpity, just sharp searches for the way the world spins round, with a lot of spirituality inside, which at the same time is very down to earth (if I’m to understand it somewhat, has to be).
So I got the two albums they have out, been favorites for months now. It even grew on the girl, while a bit sceptical at first. So when they came to Paradiso, time to go check them out, and she’s now totally converted. Even if planned in afternoon, and in small hall, the show went really well. I got a bit of an uneasy feeling when only 50 or so people showed up, Tony turned out to be a bit shy, but when reception was good (and most people seemed to know what to expect), they presented a nice mix of both their albums, some solo songs with only Tony, technically really well.
Foremost change with the albums, I now consider those a bit ‘flat’ produced. Debut simply is, 2nd is actually well produced, but we got to hear his voice so much better, which drew much more attention to his words, and emphasised the beauty of that voice is a major attraction for the band. Sincere, somewhat female even, spiritual. There's an urge to his words that I hardly see around, we went home kinda ‘high’…
Below are the songs they prolly thought are most catchy for promotion, but there’s some more worthy for (our) funerals - big thanks for playing ‘A man with no skin’ (that be me) and ‘I could be nothing’ (from my much more spiritual girl).
From their selftitled debut:
Moving pictures silent films;
I will never see the sun.
From ‘Bodies and minds’:
Various stages;
Bodies and minds.
Tagnuts
(October 16, 2005)
Integer (aka Andy Porter from the Isle of Man, with blog these days), in charge at Skinnables (where I do some stuff, like he does at VP), and me do some projects together at times. This one was started more than a year ago, came to a grinding halt when someone prepared to be married (actually, way before…;), and, well, is still highly unfinished.
It's online now though, a very Alpha release, just an attempt to get us motivated. It's about css and (x)html, has some information, lacks a lot of information still:
Ideas, criticism, all welcome ;).
