remove system menu icon

Never been insterested in doing it before so have never payed any attention to it.
But now, I want to remove the icon from the upper left corner on windows/application like you see in many screenshot (almost every single one on customize.org)
But every search term I've tried came up with nothing, so I'm hoping that someone here knows how to do it.
