open/save dialog buttons pics in winXP

Ok, i've looked everywhere and i can't figure this out. I want to change the upper-right icons that appear in the winXP open/save dialog. (the dialog with the places bar on the left) I was able to change the toolbar buttons which appear in explorer by modifying bitmaps in shell32.dll, but for some reason the buttons in the open/save dialog are not affected by this even though they appear to be the same icons. I have searched throught tons of dll's and other files listed on WinT's site and on virtual plastic to find the proper bitmap or icon resources to edit with no luck. (virtual plastic says that they are in Comctl32.dll, but these are the old icons and not the new xp ones) If anyone has successfully changed them or knows where to find them any help would be appreciated!

Have you tried these two files?:

%windir%\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.0.0_x-ww_1382d70a\comctl32.dll

%windir%\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.10.0_x-ww_f7fb5805\comctl32.dll

why are they in such wierd places?!

The WinSxS folder is for compatibility with programs that insist on using a certain version of a file, such as a dll. Instead of replacing the original, the file gets it's own special location (hence the long folder name), where it doesn't disturb the "real" system file. I haven't seen the paths anywhere on vp yet, but maybe if plastic sees this he can add them somewhere ;).

how far are those files safe to modify? could i change the color pallet or gray scale them? also, would i have to change them in shell32.dll as well? i remember those being somewhere else as well and when i gray scaled them it didn't work...

Yeah, I believe the color palette is a tricky subject, not sure though. There's info here somewhere at VP, though my mind has misplaced the location.
