Katrina :: I survived her :)

Hello there fellow VP members, WinT has been down for 7 days now due to the single most powerful hurricane to ever hit the United States in recorded history (or, that's what they say anyway)

I have never in my life seen anything like that. I live only about 90 miles inland from where the hurricane made landfall, and since it was larger than the state of Texas, 90 miles inland did NOT mean any relative safety.

My town was not destroyed, but blown to hell and back pretty bad. We've been in a total blackout now for 7 days, power has JUST NOW been turned back on. Power crews from all over the country came here to help out, and they did a terrific job. They couldn't get the power on any sooner due to the large amount of HUGE trees that were all over the road, and the powerlines, and the power poles that were snapped in half.

I've been living off of canned foods, charcoal grills, and small fires, lol. It's just been horrible, but could have been worse.

However, people below me in the towns of Hattiesburg, Laurel, Biloxi, Gulfport, all of which are in Mississippi (I"m in Meridian,MS btw) had it much worse, and are still without anything.

New Orleans, Louisiana was destroyed, or flooded out. Refugees from that major city are now here in my small town of Meridian,MS by the thousands, and when I say thousands, I mean thousands.

We're running out of gas here, the gas prices are surging at a rapid rate, we're experiencing a high crime rate at the moment, and it's just a total mess.

However, things can now go somewhat back to normal with everyone having power, or most of us having it anyway. There's still some spots where the poles haven't been replaced yet, but should be done today.

I've never been so happy to see a TV, and a computer before. It's an amazing thing. I can now run my water again, take showers, eat good hot food, etc...

These things, I've learned, are taken for granted by just about everyone, this, I will never do again.

I thank God for my life most of all though, I made it through it, didn't loose any friends or family, and my house and job are still here.

So, I'm back again, thought some of you might be wondering. Take care, talk to you all again soon

See, I had no idea where you were located exactly, but your mississippi email addy and you not being around made me wonder. I've also been seeing quite a few disturbing scenes (New Orleans mostly), so very glad to see you safe & solid WinT.

Thanks plastic... it's good to be safe and solid too man, really is.

I concur with Plastic here, glad you are safe & solid Mr. WindowsTweaker.

Glad to hear you made it through WinT... =)
Every TV and Radio station over here in Cali is being totally bombed w/ unreal shots of what happened over there, I've never seen anything like that in my lifetime, so sad to see everyone over there going through it...
(but so glad you're okay!)

Thanks Mr. PK and Doreen, it is appreciated :) I've never seen anything quite like it myself, not sure what to think really :(

Posted this in the crew forum too, but...

I'm so glad you're OK. I didn't realize you are in MS. And I thought the blackout was bad...

I just hope we finally get off our @ss and start helping each other. I personally think W should be run out of office for his lack of response, but that's another discussion...

Please give our best to those affected.

Thanks beaker, and yeah, even though the " W " remark is another discussion, I couldn't agree more.

I can say this though for sure... I saw a rapid, vivid change in everyone here in my town. Being the south and all, there's still a ton of racism here... which I've always been against in full, never did like that, but the point is, people starting helping people. All races, backgrounds, everything, just mixed together. It was a great thing.

I think that sometimes things like this disaster bring out the best, and the worst in people, and luckily, so far, I've seen the best coming out :)

And ya know, I'm not sure why I posted this in the crew forum, I was so sleep deprived at the time, plus the power had just came on, I just didn't know what to do with myself :)

Anyway, thanks again beaker for your words my friend, take care :)

Well, it's good to know that not even hurricanes can keep the Mighty WinT down.

06 Sep. 2005 - 00:36 WinT
lol @ craeonics! " The Mighty WinT " <-- Hmm... I sorta like that :) And thanks spyder and dreamz, your words are appreciated.

Happy here to see you in action again. Spain (I really know) solidarizes with the american people, like you all did with us in Madrid's recent terrorism attack.

Hope to you all and the best wishes!

Glad you survived WinT. I live in Queensland, Australia and cyclones (as we call hurricanes) are a yearly occurrence here. Though I have never seen any thing like you have, I know what it is like to anxiously sit through one of these staggeringly powerful storms.

Thanks lsdx and grindlestone... glad to see you both still around :)

Glad you're well, WinT - but... wait... If there has been something wrong with the "Mighty WinT", they should have talked about it in the news, isn't it? ;)

No, sincerely, I'm really really glad you weren't hurt. Hope this is the first and last time you see something like that coming at your door...

14 Sep. 2005 - 07:14 WinT
Me too extatic! lol Thanks for your words man, as well as deathmedic3rd :)

I was in Hurricane Katrina. I had lived in New Orleans. There were some parts that didn't get trashed by the flooding or the hurricane itself. My house made it through perfectly. But there was someone else's swing in our front yard. (: I moved to Lake Charles not too long afterwards, knowing little that Hurricane Rita was on its way. We then evacuated to Texas, taking us about 26 hours to go a regular 4 hour trip. Hurricane Rita was know as the most powerful hurricane in 2005, but Katrina did the most damage to more than one city. Rita totally screwed up Cameron Parish, and some of Calcasieu. They allowed us to get back in like three days after the hurricane. It was like a total different town when i got back. Trees were on people's houses, cars were somewhere unimaginable, just think of all the leaves there was everywhere, considering it was September. My favorite part about it, is that we didn't have to go back to school until the end of October.(: It's just weird seeing a place you've lived in forever, since you were a little kid, be gone in 3 days. Glad we're okay thoughh(:
