looking for a little app ...

freeware is best (console too) ...
i have alot of fonts on my pc. i'd like to back them up on cd, but i wanted to rename them all to the name that is shown when you view it in fontview.exe ... with over 3000 fonts that's a little time intensive. any one know of a little app that will batch rename 'em. maybe also kill spaces (like if a font is "Helvetica Extra Bold" it'll rename to "HelveticaExtraBold") and increment files of the same name (like if you have two of the same font (easy to happen with 3000 files) they'll get name "font1" and "font2").

thanks for any feedback.

TTFRen should do your initial job. In theory you shouldn't come across the second issue because Windows won't let you have two fonts with exactly the same name, but in case you do you can always resort to using RenameTT to fix them manually, or there's an app known as TTAlias which apparently does the same thing, though I couldn't find it anywhere.

Lastly, if you want to archive them all, I recommend using BatchZipUtil. It's meant for emulation roms, but it works just as well for fonts.

You might also try 1-4a Rename. Decent app with many many options.

last night i gave ttfrn a try, just to see what it did. what it did was make my machine unbootable; winlogon crashes at startup, at just about the point where you'd expect it to start loading fonts. when i get home today, i'm re-installing from scratch, as nothing, but nothing, seems to fix this.

mostly, ticked at myself for having been dumb enough to give this thing a try. for the rest of you, though, do NOT use ttfrn, or better yet, don't mess with your fonts in general. it's totally not worth the hassle i've just gone through trying to get my machine back up.
