show file extension in the Details panel
on windows 98, when you select a file, in the details panel at left it shows the file's extension after it's name. xp doesn't do that and it's really annoying, cause there's no way to see a file's extension without turning off "hide extensions for known filetypes". any way to change this? i looked through the site, but i didn't find a clear answer.
Well, I think you should always have the extensions visible anyway. The 'I Love You' virus-thingy was spread because of this one 'feature' of Windows...
In answer to your question, no
On Win2k/XP, you could write a Shell Column Extension (Shell Details Extension on XP - same thing, different name) to add a column containing the extension, but on 98 this isn't possible.
The other solution is to go through the entire registry for every registered filetype and rename its description so it starts with the extension - i.e. rename "Bitmap Image" with "(.bmp) Bitmap Image". That'll work, but will only handle known extensions and will take a long time...
The only other option is to use a different explorer - there are several replacements around. On a board a while ago we were talking about the "perfect" explorer - its options and so forth, well this has got to be one!
