talk about a customization!
well.... this isn't exactly about changing the
look...
but as per instructions on
lirc.org, i now have a working (!!) homemade IR receiver hanging off of COM2...
and, combined with a ported program off of
the WinLIRC homepage, along with a plugin for winamp, i now have a remote controlled winamp!!!
this is some seriously sweet stuff.... i'd seen the LIRC site before and had kinda forgotten about it until i started fooling with putting winamp controls on the taskbar the other week. and then i started thinking, why put controls somewhere on screen when i could have a remote...
anyways, i can't believe that this thing works. i'm not exactly a genuis with a soldering gun, so my receiver is quite a mess, with bare leads stickign out all over the place. on the upside, the parts i had to order to build this thing came in like quantities of 10, so i could build a couple more if i want, and learn to make it prettier.
and what did this all cost me? about $5... ( canadian, which is like 50 cents to you all in the states. )
so, like i said, this doesn't really belong under desktop customization, but i figured it
is customizing my work enviroment, so i thought i'd share.
off to play
i made an IR Receiver long time ago and tried some progs..
i think gIRder is much better than winLIRC..
with plugins u can make your own homemade multimedia station with video, sound (and so on) using a standard TV/VCR/HiFi remote.
test it, and make your own opinion

Oh yeah, another tweaker hehe. I bought one of those old packard bell remotes they sell on ebay once. At the time i didn't know the receivers on those suck really bad. But it was fun for a while, heh.
For winamp, i like to use hotkeys. Always a few clicks away when you're working on the computer. And that autohide plugin saunders pointed out for winamp 2.x is the coolest imo.
okay, first of all....
demlak: that link you gave me for girder really rocks! i appreciate the tip. much, much more superior to winLIRC. a little harder to use, more of a learniing curve i guess, but wow... talk about the level of control... being able to open programs at a click.... scripting... i'm going to be playing with this for a long time... i have winamp all configured with it now, and i'm also finding that it reads my remote with far more accuracy, almost like using a remote with a real stereo or something. so much thanks!
spyder and all interested...: the link i gave for the LIRC site has the best instructions for building your own receiver, with real easy to understand schematics. the hardest part was finding the IC component, which of course is the most important. but depending on where you live, any good electronics store should be able to order them up for you.
and of course it can use any remote, so no problem there...
schminimalist: hotkeys are great, but how great is it to be having a a few people over and being able to use your 'puter as a stereo.
johnnyfist: checkout winamp site for plugins. i know i've seen a few that allow you to control winamp either through a browser or i even saw one that allowed control through telnet. ( although that was a 2.X plugin... i prefer 2.9 over 3... )
red: i'd check out that link that demlak gave.... i noticed that that program supports a whole range of remotes & recievers.
well.. girder supports every IR-Receiver, coz it?s using plugin-drivers. just depends on "is there a driver for my receiver?"
girder supports to remote EVERY application on a windows pc.
u have to choose between preconfigured plugins for some appz, or make your own, one time u understand how this works, u will allways make fast and easy for every programm a controll over ir-remote.
play around a little bit.. it?s much easyer as it looks =)
Dude.. whoa.. I think you misplaced your decimal.
I calculate that as $3.44 US. Not 32 cents!
Unless you were joking, in which case, I'll feel pretty foolish.
