How do you kill M$ IE?
I really have two questions:
1) How can I rig it so IE is not longer associated to anything at all? Specifically my url files. I tried to fix them manually, but now they give me errors all the time. And I just set the path (correctly) and the icon (correctly), and I know there is something special because I've been through this before and can't remember how I fixed it. Sabotaging M$ can't stand the thought of ppl not using their browser, and need to be slapped around by a guy in prison named Bubble. (and yes I used set browser... it doesn't include url links... it's that just lovely?)
2) How can i kill IE without killing all the stuff stupid wannabe coders (who need to be slapped around in prison by a guy named bubble) force me to use as dependancies?
I hate M$ and IE. I really, really
hate them.

Why do you use MS Windows if you hate Microsoft. Is your hatred really justified by anything or are you just saying that?
Oh yes, it's justified. M$ IE just screwed up my system, and now I gotta fix it. Just the incinuation that if you us a M$ OS you have to use all M$ apps is infuriating to me. Now do you really wanna get Red, of all ppl, started on it? I really have a hard time ranting about M$ and staying civil. That's why I don't go into, but can't resisting saying somehting about it.
I will say this, switching OS's is a major pain no matter what it is. Even from windows to windows because of drivers and compatability. And yes I mean 98, 2000, XP, and Linux. I can't tell you how many friends had to trash printers or software (esp games) because they "up graded" to XP. I use 98 because it came on my box. I've found the less M$ products I use, the faster & more stable it is. This is just another example of it to me. I barely touch an M$ product, and my system gets screwed up. Would you be happy?

I'm happy.

I thought URL files only work w/ IE.

Fer gittin' rid of IE, go wander around
here. Good luck trying to find a URL compatible browser, although you could try a batch file that does something like this:
@c:\progra~1\mozilla.org\mozilla\mozilla.exe %*
Not quite sure if it works that way, but I think it seems likely...

.url's work fine for me, and i use Phoenix. generally, when you install a browser, and open it for the first time, it asks if you want to make it your default browser. if you click yes, then .url's become associated with it ( you may have noticed when you changed the association, that they're hooked into shdocvw.
dll, not IE ). my guess, on how to fix your problem, would be to go into IE internet options, go to the Programs tab, click the "check to see if IE is default browser" box, run IE, and set it as the default. that should set the .url files to what they normall ought to be. then, check your browser of preference, for a "default browser" setting.
HELLLLOOOOO??? I said things got screwed up. They were working fine with k-meleon for the past
year. I just need to get them working again. And I reinstalled both twice and set them as default. They won't work with IE either.
And thx, but I already did that trick too, joh6nn.
No dice.
What's that shdocw.
dll key look like, tho?
Maybe it's got something to do with that.
What I need is to know how to manually and completely set the file and icon association of url files. Every in and out. It's complex (overly complex even), and not like normal ones.
I'm open to more tricks, but I doubt they'll work.

here's all of the shell key entry for .url's, as per my registry. try importing it, and see if that fixes the problem
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\open]
"CLSID" = "{FBF23B40-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}"
"LegacyDisable" = ""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\open\command]
@ = "rundll32.exe shdocvw.
dll,OpenURL %l"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\print]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\print\command]
@ = "rundll32.exe C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\MSHTML.DLL,PrintHTML \"%1\""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\printto]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\printto\command]
@ = "rundll32.exe C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\MSHTML.DLL,PrintHTML \"%1\" \"%2\" \"%3\" \"%4\""

You said you tried to fix it, but didn't mention something was broken in the first place. Well, except that you implied M$ software is broken to begin with. (Why didn't you tell us that you had k-meleon working with it fine in the first place?)
Anyhoo, which Windows version are you using, btw?
Have you tried opening Explorer and going to Folder Options (either via View or Tools, depending on OS version)? There you can go to File Types and change the program URL is associated with.
mimeryme: Did that and through the registry manually. I'm on 98fe.
joh6nn: Worth a shot. I'll let you know.
Thx to those who are trying to help me out.

have you tried TweakUI's Repair Associations utility?
After 8 url-fix.reg files, some random tweaking, a good hard kick, plenty of curses and death threats, and I don't know what else, it started working again. I have no idea what fixed it, but I'm still left a problem: ugly IE icons. And ya, it's opening with k-meleon. o.O;
I'm about to hack IE to get the icons to work, but does anyoneknow how to change them through the registry? Again, the normal way won't work. All .url files can have custom icons just like .lnk and such.
I'm going to take a look through and see what the problem was. I think the shodcvw.
dll got messed up when I upgraded IE, and one of the fixes tweaked it right.

Curiosity item:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
In that key is a fairly interesting binary value called "IntegratedBrowser", set to 00000001b on my box... Anyone interested?

good observation, and i could sound dumb saying this but it doesn't seem boolean to me, ie. 0=off 1=on, the 1b makes me think there's a few different settings. anyone know more about this?

You can't kill Internet Explorer. It's integrated with windows. That's what EXPLORER is. I guess in a way you can kill INTERNET explorer by add/remove windows components. But no one's mentioned that yet.

Red, for all my file association fun, i use WAssociate, which is stil on the front page of VP. you can use that to change the icons.
Vivi: I don't use the explorer shell, and too many apps require parts of IE to take such a direct & simple method. I must admit, I wish it were so simple.
Joh6nn: It's worth a try, but hard to say if it will work. This is no ordinary file type. Still, It sounds useful, so thx for the tip.
Addy: That is interesting.
Wraith: I agree, but for the moment that's all I can do.
Joh6nn: It didn't work on .url files, but iI did use it to fix several others I would have been forced to scour the registry to fix (several images and such). Thx for the help. Not what I was hoping for, but a splendid surprize nonetheless. I'm thinking about contacting the author about it, and talk to him about some more advanced icons in windows.
